You are invited to submit a course proposal for Interim 2008.  The Interim Program was instituted as an opportunity for faculty and students to participate in creative and innovative educational experiences.  The flexible nature of the program lends itself to a wide range of offerings.  Courses of study that might not be appropriate for regular offering in the fall and spring semesters may be taught.  Courses may be developed on an experimental basis that at a later time may be added to regular semester offerings.  Interim also provides the opportunity for students to enroll in individual research or independent study activities.  For these students, regular term course numbers are used.  Courses that involve travel or experiential learning are particularly suited to the Interim format.  Please contact the Office for Academic Affairs for information and advice on planning these travel courses.

In planning courses, please remember that the flexible nature of the Interim Program allows for classes beginning before and extending after the three-week period traditionally known as Interim term, provided that the majority of the course work is completed during the term itself.  Faculty members may wish to develop courses that have a week of intensive classroom experience during one week of the Interim term and spread other out-of-class learning experiences over several weeks or months.  Possibilities for the development of such courses are virtually limitless.

While the Interim Program was created as an opportunity for innovative and intensive education, needs may develop for regular semester courses to be taught during that three-week period.  These needs may be caused by high student demand, limited resources, and several other factors.  If there is a clear and convincing need, a departmental chairperson may ask the office of the appropriate dean to approve the offering of a regular term course during Interim.

Compensation for Interim 2008 has been simplified.  The salary for teaching a three-hour course will be the lesser of eighty-five percent (85%) of the in-state tuition paid by the student or 7.5% of the professor’s academic year salary.  A faculty member who wishes to teach a course with another faculty member should be advised that salary in this situation will be handled as Summer School salaries; that is, each professor will be paid a percentage of the salary which would be paid if the professor had taught the course alone.  The percentage is dependent on the amount of the professor’s involvement in the course.  In no case should the total involvement of the professor be more than one hundred percent (100%).  In no case shall compensation for teaching any 3- hour course exceed 7.5% of a professor’s academic year salary.
